Asian BBQ Restaurant Opening Sunday at Rockville Town Square

A new barbecue restaurant is scheduled to open Sunday, Sept. 1, in Rockville Town Square.

Friendship BBQ, at 33 E Maryland Ave., is a fast-casual Asian BBQ restaurant with skewered meats and seafoods using wood imported from the Xinjiang region of China giving it a unique flavor.

Owner James Du brought the concept from New York to Rockville paying tribute to the Big Apple via a pop graffiti mural on the wall.

“This type of BBQ is one surrounded and shared by friends. That’s how I envision this restaurant. We have designed it to incorporate art and environment into your dining experience,” Du said.

The 2,300-square-foot restaurant seats 74 people and will be open for both lunch and dinner. Most entrees are portioned to share.

Friendship BBQ is offering a 10 percent discount and free appetizer special September 1-7 to celebrate the grand opening.

This is the first restaurant of four new tenants who have recently signed leases at Rockville Town Square offering an expanded Asian flair to The Square.

Buildout continues on the three others, Gyuzo Japanese BBQ, Kyoto Matcha and Cents Taro Family, which will occupy the former Mellow Mushroom location.

Gyuzo Japanese BBQ is coming in the fall next to Buffalo Wild Wings. Guests at the 3,900-square-foot restaurant will grill menu selections themselves on their tabletop. This fun experience is a blend of traditional Japanese and modern culture. The restaurant seats 100 people with a dozen extra seats at the bar that will offer trendy tropical fusion drinks alongside traditional sake offerings.

Kyoto Matcha offers Instagrammable desserts including matcha soft ice cream & cakes as well as Japanese green tea. Kyoto Matcha is expected to open its doors this fall alongside Gyuzo Japanese BBQ. The 800-square-foot dessert spot seats 24 people.

Cents Taro Family will open this fall between Kyoto Matcha and Lebanese Taverna. This 865-square-foot dessert eatery will offer handmade taro balls, an authentic Taiwanese round dessert, as well as, other popular Asian desserts.
