Artists Reception at Kentlands Mansion
The City of Gaithersburg presents an exhibit featuring paintings and drawings by Vian Shamounki Borchert, David Hawksford and Chris Luckman at Kentlands Mansion from now through December 6. The public is invited to a free Artists’ Reception on October 15 from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Vian Shamounki Borchert is an award-winning contemporary artist who has shown both internationally and nationally in many group and solo exhibitions. Her work is featured in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Art in Amman, Jordan and The Jerusalem Fund Gallery in Washington, D.C., and her artwork has recently been on display at the United Nations General Assembly, Public Lobby Gallery. Borchert is a graduate of the Corcoran College of Art and Design and holds a Master of Web Design degree. Her expressionistic and abstracted art illustrates a poetic mood and a thoughtful journey into the world of painting. David Hawksford has been painting and drawing since he could pick up a crayon, enjoying drawing and experimenting with colors and other mediums throughout his childhood. After serving in the Army, Hawksford studied art, painting and printmaking at Montgomery College while receiving private instruction in art conservation. He has worked as a house painter, faux finisher, muralist, gilder, and painting conservationist. While his work did not leave much time to devote to painting, he kept his love of drawing active by filling up sketchbooks with pen and quill ink drawings. In 2008, he began to devote more time to painting with a focus on wildlife. “The study of wildlife in its natural habitat is unique in the structure and line of the animals’ bodies and the environment in which they live,” says Hawksford. “An average painting can take from 170 to 200 hours to complete. The attention to detail is time consuming, although it is immensely satisfying to view, show and enjoy the finished product. When I paint, I become absorbed in the animal and its environment, pulling each expression, body movement and covering of the animal from the background of the canvas and making the subject come alive.” Hawksford’s artwork may be viewed at www.colonialrestorationstudio.blogspot.com.
Local artist Chris Luckman presents a selection of her travel paintings in this exhibit. A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art, Luckman continued her study of painting at Art New England in Bennington, Vermont and at the Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo, Maryland. After a successful art teaching career, she is now retired and maintains a painting studio in Takoma Park and travels the world with her paint box. Luckman has exhibited her paintings widely, both locally and nationally, and has won several awards. Her landscapes and architectural studies reflect her personal and visual journey from here to the corners of the earth. With a strong interest in cross cultural understanding, she would like to share her rich and colorful travel experiences.
