Art Exhibit At Kentlands Mansion (Photos)

Gaithersburg’s Arts on the Green presents an exhibit of acrylics and pastels featuring the works of Donna Baron, Peggy Dunn and Marlene Sapperstein now through October 10, at Kentlands Mansion.

Donna Baron (Acrylic) feels each painting is an accumulation of all the classes, books, workshops, experiments, successes, and failures in a never ending journey down many paths. When Baron paints in watercolor, she concentrates on technique and learning to see shapes, values and color. As she branched out into oils and acrylics, she started to paint outdoors, “en plein air.” She says landscape is a very complicated place when you’re standing in the middle of it, and simplifying or abstracting the landscape was necessary. In order to paint and think more abstractly, Baron nailed down the principles of design and composition by creating collages and painting experimentally. She says when there is no preconceived subject and the painting develops layer by layer, the elements and principles of design act as guideposts in the creation of a successful painting. Whether moving paint, metal or paper, Baron is happy as long as she is learning and creating.

Peggy Dunn (Pastels) received her Master of Arts degree from the University of Miami in 1976. After moving to Washington, DC, she worked as a freelance illustrator with clients that included NBC, CBS and ABC magazines and The Washington Post. In 1985, Dunn was hired as a courtroom illustrator for CNN, where she covered many notable trials and U.S. Supreme Court Senate and Congressional hearings. Upon moving to Mount Dora, Florida, Dunn became entranced with landscape and floral painting in pastels. In 2004, she was chosen for a juried show at the Mount Dora Center for the Arts, and Disney selected her floral painting for a horticulture event in 2006. Dunn currently resides in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood.

Marlene Sapperstein (Acrylic) was born and bred in Baltimore and developed a great appreciation for water, including lakes, streams, oceans, and wetlands. Dividing her time between Maryland and southeast Florida, the natural beauty in both states provides inspiration for her acrylic waterscapes. Nothing inspires Sapperstein more than an outdoor scene or a view with long shadows and bright sun in the early morning or late afternoon, when the colors are rich, saturated and harmonious. Her intention is to create a scene that is even more interesting and intense for the enjoyment of the viewer. Sapperstein studies with Maryland art teachers and currently participates and exhibits with local art organizations, including Strathmore, Montgomery Art Association, City of Gaithersburg, and Rockville Art League.
