Art Classes for Active Seniors at County Libraries

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is offering two free art classes for active seniors (55 +) at Twinbrook and White Oak Libraries starting in April. All class materials will be provided. Each participant will complete at least one finished quality piece of work by the end of the class.

Both classes will be taught by artist Stephen T. Hanks, who has taught at Montgomery College, Leisure World and senior centers, among other venues.

The classes will be held according to the following schedule:

• Watercolor Painting – Each Monday from April 21 (skipping May 26) through June 2, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Twinbrook Library, 202 Meadow Hall Dr., Rockville. Class limited to 12 participants. Registration required for all six sessions. The class will introduce participants to the principles of good composition in a watercolor painting and will explore 20 different watercolor concepts and techniques and how to apply them in a painting.
• Drawing Fundamentals – Each Thursday from April 24 through May 29, 12:30 to 3 p.m., at the White Oak Library, 11701 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring. Class limited to 12 participants. Registration required for all six sessions. Participants will be introduced to the principles of good composition in a drawing; the basics of drawing — including linear-perspective, semi-blind contour drawing, 3D shading, drawing basic 3D forms — and more details on creating a good composition.
