Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman and the City Council have declared April as Arab American Heritage Month. The proclamation took place during a City Council meeting on Tuesday night.
Mayor Ashman and the Council wanted to recognize the tremendous contributions of the Arab American community.
“Arab Americans have been part of American society since the American revolution and have played prominent roles in government, business and industry, education, culture, the arts and public affairs,” Ashman said.
Mona Negm, a board member of the Montgomery County Muslim Foundation and active volunteer in the County, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the City’s Arab American community.
“I’d like to thank you first thank you all for the honor of receiving this proclamation. I’m so honored and proud to be a representative of Arab Americans,” Negm said.
The Mayor and City Council will host a reception for Arab American Month on Monday, April 11 at 6 p.m. in the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. A video of the Council session and proclamation is posted on the City of Gaithersburg’s website.
