Update: Applicants Wanted for Rockville’s Charter Review Commission
Update: The deadline to apply to serve on Rockville’s Charter Review Commission is extended to July 8 by 5 p.m.
Original: Rockville’s Mayor and Council are seeking applicants for the Charter Review Commission. The commission will review specific provisions of the charter as directed by the Mayor and Council.
The city was incorporated in 1860 by charter. It establishes the city’s corporate limits and outlines how the city is organized and conducts business, such as holding elections, levying taxes, adopting ordinances, and providing services.
The commission will be comprised of up to 11 city residents. The Mayor and each Councilmember may choose one member. The mayor will nominate a commission chair, to be approved by the council. The Mayor and Council together will select and approve five additional members. The chair of the city’s Board of Supervisors of Elections will serve as a nonvoting ex officio representative to the commission.
The commission will begin their review this summer and will meet once or twice each month. The commission will solicit input from the community.
Interested applicants should submit letters of interest and resumes via email to the City Clerk at sferrell@rockvillemd.gov.

The Mayor and Council will hold at least one public hearing to determine the scope of the commission’s work at a date yet to be decided.
The Mayor and Council last appointed a Charter Review Commission in 2012, which made recommendations about the length of elected terms of the Mayor and Council, the number of members on the council, and the schedule by which Mayor and Council elections are held. The commission also identified several ways to enhance voting, including early voting and voting by mail.
