Apartment Fire Displaces Aspen Hill Residents
An apartment fire displaced 21 people from their homes, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service (MCFRS).
It happened in the 2900 block of Hewitt Avenue in Aspen Hill on Tuesday afternoon at the Somerset Apartments.
Residents discovered the fire on the top floor of the three-story apartment building, according to MCFRS spokesman Pete Piringer. The smoke alarms in the apartment where the fire started were disabled, but one of the residents pulled a manual fire alarm.
Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said smoke was showing when firefighters arrived at the scene. About 85 firefighters responded to the fire.
According to Piringer, the fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damages. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.
On Wednesday evening, firefighters plan to return to the scene to check smoke alarms and talk to residents about fire safety.
