Almost 8,000 County Residents Filed for Unemployment Last Week

Unemployment claims in Montgomery County topped 5,200 last week, which is about 2,000 fewer than were filed the week ending on May 9, according to the Maryland Department of Labor.

An additional 2,624 county residents filed through the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistant (PUS) and the Pandemic Emergency Compensation (PEUC), which is slightly less than last week. Those two funds are part of the federal stimulus bill.

Combining all three categories, 7,853 county residents filed an unemployment claim with the state Department of Labor during the week that ended May 16, according to figures released May 21.

Statewide, 34,745 people filed unemployment claims last week. An additional 16,363 Marylanders filed for PUA and PEUC, for a total of 51,108 claims, which is almost 15,000 fewer than last week.
