Alexandria Officials to Tour Lakelands Park Synthetic Turf Field

2lakelands_park_002 (1)Gaithersburg city officials will welcome park officials from the city of Alexandria on May 21.

According to an item in the city’s Daily Briefing, the Alexandria officials want to visit the new synthetic turf field at Lakelands Park.

The eco-friendly synthetic turf field at Lakelands Park is becoming a model for others building fields in the area because of its unique properties, including organic infill of rice husks, coconut fiber and cork. According to the city’s website, these natural materials are not implicated in health concerns raised with artificial turf fields using black rubber infill.

At Monday night’s Council meeting, city officials reported that the city’s newly instituted open play at the turf field attracted over two dozen neighborhood players on May 2nd and May 3rd.

Open play is now permitted at the field on Saturdays from 2 – 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 – 5 p.m. No formal practices take place during open play.
