Albornoz Says Council Continues to Receive Threats
Councilmember Gabe Albornoz confirmed to MyMCMedia that the County Council has continued receiving threatening messages since a rally over illegal immigration in September.
People were rallying in protest of an executive order County Executive Marc Elrich, signed in July, ruling that county employees cannot investigate an immigration case unless provided a court order.
Albornoz told MyMCMedia, “Out of an abundance of caution, we have stepped up security for councilmembers generally over the last few weeks, and until things subside we’ll continue to evaluate this to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”
Susan Kenedy, a spokesperson for the council, sent MyMCMedia the following statement:
The safety of community members and Councilmembers at Council meetings and community events has been an ongoing concern for many years. These issues are regularly evaluated by the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) which makes recommendations to the Council on the steps that should be taken for security at the Council Office Building and at community meetings, town halls and public events throughout Montgomery County. The Council has followed many of the protocols suggested by MCPD over the last several years to keep community members and themselves safe. These measures are part of our ongoing efforts with MCPD to provide safe spaces in the community for residents to express their views directly to their local leaders.
