Adventure Theatre MTC’s 66th Season to Feature Judy Moody and More

Adventure Theatre MTC (ATMTC) announced its upcoming season to include five main stage productions featuring two world premieres. The children’s theater is located in Glen Echo Park.

The new season kicks off with How I Became a Pirate, based on the book of the same title by Melinda Long and illustrations by David Shannon. Jenny Male directs the story of young Jeremy Jacob who is plucked from obscurity while innocently constructing a sand castle and is thrust into a brand-new life as a pirate.

Over the holiday season, ATMTC presents Frosty the Snowman, based on the song written by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson and directed by Jason Schlafstein. Children will dance along as a top hat brings a snowman to life in a delightful production for the entire family.

The new year at ATMTC begins with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Director Cara Gabriel is at the helm of the story of everyone’s favorite anti-hero who is having the worst day ever.

Next is the world premiere of Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt. The play, based on two of the Judy Moody books written by Megan McDonald and illustrated by Peter Reynolds, is the result of an unique collaboration of seven children’s theaters across the country.

Michael Bobbitt, ATMTC artistic director, approached other children’s theaters across the country to bring the fictional character Judy Moody to the stage for the first time. The group of seven theaters – Bay Area Children’s Theatre in Oakland, California; Children’s Theatre of Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina; First Stage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Oregon Children’s Theatre in Portland, Oregon; Orlando Repertory Theatre in Orlando, Florida; and the Rose Theater in Omaha, Nebraska – commissioned playwright Allison Gregory to create a play based on “Judy Moody” and “Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt”. A partial grant from the National Endowment for the Arts supports this work.

Each theater will independently produce its own production of the new play in a separate shared world premiere, starting in the fall of 2017 and ending in the spring of 2019.

Finally, the season is concluded with a world premiere play by Patrick Flynn, Tinker Bell, based on the works of Sir J. M. Barrie. Directed by multiple Helen Hayes Award nominee and Charles MacArthur Award recipient, Nick Olcott (who the pirates have promised not to kidnap or ransom), this is the story of Neverland and Peter Pan from everyone’s favorite fairy’s perspective.

Adventure Theatre MTC’s Artistic Director, Michael J. This is truly the opportunity for families to come together, create memories, and appreciate the amazing art that DC Theatre has to offer.”

ATMTC is currently only allowing purchase of Season Flexpasses 2017-2018 Season. Season Flexpasses, which contain 10 tickets per book, provide a discount on the ticket price and processing fees, and offer unlimited exchanges. Single ticket sale dates will be announced at a later date.
