Overturned Truck Slows Rush Hour (VIDEO & PHOTOS)
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials responded to a call on June 1 for an overturned truck and collision at the intersection of East Gude Drive and Crabbs Branch Way in Rockville.
According to Pete Piringer, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Spokesperson, the call came in at 7:45 a.m. during a busy commuting morning. Piringer said the truck “barely missed” another car, a white minivan.
“Police are conducting an investigation of what happened. Appears as though the truck was making a left turn coming from three fifty-five on to Crabbs Branch way. Of course, that’s a hill there. There’s a traffic light. Witnesses indicated the light may have been changing; the truck may have been going a little bit too fast for whatever reason. The breaks appear to have failed; possibly,” Piringer said.
Hazmat crews were called in because of the fuel spill. According to Piringer, about 50 gallons of hydraulic and brake fluids were spilled on the road. Diesel tanks remained intact.
Elnaz Safavieh, a TD Bank employee, said she was about to get to work when she heard a “big slam” and turned around and saw smoke coming from the truck.
“The truck was tipped over. The guy got out and he was limping a little bit. It wasn’t more than like two seconds I guess a cop was close by and a siren started going off and he started to block everything off,” Safavieh said adding that police, firefighters, and ambulance showed up in “less than five minutes.”
The driver of the minivan was not injured, and the truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
