A Magical Place

I’ve got “oh ho ho it’s magic” playing over and over again in my head after a visit to Barry’s Magic Shop in Rockville for our latest MyMCMEDIA.org on Location story. This was my first visit to the magical place.

After 38 years in the business, Magician Barry Taylor and his wife Susie have decided to close their beloved store as of mid-July. Barry plans to keep performing, in fact, he bedazzled me with his illusions but the shop (which has become a gathering place for local magicians) is going away.

During our recent visit and interview, I repeatedly asked wide-eyed and open-mouthed how he did it, and he simply smiled and replied with the catchy song: “It’s magic…never believe it’s not so.” There’s so much to see and do at his shop: if you get a chance between now and July 14 make it a point to check it out. I bet you will leave with a smile on your face (and everything is on sale). You can also check out our two-minute video report online.

There’s a lot going on at the MCM offices and studios this week as planning is officially underway for the Blue Festival in Silver Spring next week (June 16) and the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair in August. MCM is a sponsor of both events. We are also excited about covering the Silverdocs festival the week of June 18.

Have you checked out our video collection from the Gaithersburg Book Festival? We have compiled a page of videos from our coverage of the recent event on our website under the Arts queue. A 30-minute show is also in production featuring the highlights and authors of the literary event. Hope you will watch.

Some MCM-produced video worth watching this week is the latest episode of 501(c)(3). Host Pamela Wilkins focuses on homeless children in Montgomery County and the organizations and people helping these families.

“21 This Week’s” Casey Aiken is back on set and he’s changed his format a bit beginning each show with a monologue. This is one of the longest running political shows featuring the week’s hot topics in and around Montgomery County. The Channel 21 show airs weekly on Sundays at 11 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. and you can watch back episodes on demand too.

On Monday, June 11 MyMCMEDIA will be covering Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner’s weekly press conference. If you have a question, send us a line at web@mycmedia.org or on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MyMCMedia) and we will try to get an answer.

Speaking of Facebook, we are looking to increase our reach with county residents so please tell your friends and neighbors about our site and have them “Like” us. We are always looking for community content, so consider blogging on our site or just sending a photo over. We want to know what’s important to you.
