Rockville Mayor for a Day Young-A Kim (Video)

Miss Young-A Kim, fourth-grader at Fallsmead Elementary School serves as Rockville’s “Mayor for a Day” today (May 23). Young-A was chosen for her winning essay in the annual “If I were Mayor” essay contest. The contest is sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League (MML) and the Maryland Mayors’ Association (MMA). Rockville’s winning essay was selected from each of MML’s 11 regional districts throughout the state.

As Mayor for a Day, Young-A will go for a ride-along with the Rockville City Police, attend the Equipment Show in celebration of National Public Works Week at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center outdoor parking lot, 355 Martins Ln.; tour the Croydon Creek Nature Center, 852 Avery Rd.; and have lunch with Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio.

The theme for this year’s “If I Were Mayor” contest was “Vision for the Future.” Students addressed changes they would make as mayor, and how they would involve citizens to make the community a better place to live.

In her essay, Young-A describes her vision of a greener, eco-friendly Rockville with events she calls “Supporting Day” for a communal tree-planting and a “Rockville Cookout,” emphasizing community involvement. She says: “With the help of Rockville citizens we may accomplish anything.”

Young-A’s essay also highlights the importance of working with other cities: “If we run out of ideas of how to make our city better; then the other mayors from different cities and I may gather around and share ideas for how to make our cities a better place.”

In addition to spending a day as mayor, Young-A will participate in Rockville’s 69th Annual Memorial Day Parade at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27 in Town Square and be recognized at the June 17 Mayor and Council meeting at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave.
