Council Requests Regular Transit Center Briefings (Video)

In a memo dated April 1, Montgomery County Council President Nancy Navarro and Council member Roger Berliner ask County Executive Ike Leggett for regular briefings on the progress of the Silver Spring Transit Center. Berliner also serves as the Chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee (T&E).

“These briefings will help the Council keep the public informed and ensure public accountability for the project moving forward,” said Navarro and Berliner in the memo. “We would like to schedule the first briefing for the Council Session on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, with subsequent regular briefings as the Council requires. These briefings will focus on the county’s plan to get a safe and reliable Transit Center open to the public as quickly as possible. They will not address financial responsibility for the repairs, which may be subject to litigation, but rather will provide oversight and transparency for the plan to rehabilitate and complete the Transit Center.”

In an interview today, Montgomery County Spokesperson Patrick Lacefield said the Council may receive updates even before April 30. According to Lacefield, the county is currently studying fixes to the structure, which will begin with design work. At this time, he said a timeline for the work has not been developed yet.

On April 2, the Council is scheduled to act on a supplemental appropriation request by the General Services department for $7.5 million in funds for the Silver Spring Transit Center. The T & E Committee has recommended approval of this request.

In this video clip, General Services Director David Dise explains how that money will be spent:
