County Council Meets on March 12

The Montgomery County Council will receive a new report by the Montgomery County Office of Legislative Oversight (OLO) that updates the progress being made by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in narrowing the achievement gap among grade level and at-risk measures of student performance at its March 12 meeting.

The Council’s regular weekly session will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Council Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The regular meeting, and two afternoon public hearings scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m., will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast will be available via streaming through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov. It will be rebroadcast on Friday, March 15, starting at 9 p.m.

The OLO report is an update on a study carried out in 2008 that examined the progress MCPS had made in closing the achievement gap by race, ethnicity and service group status such as participation in special education. The report describes the magnitude of the achievement gap in areas where MCPS has made progress and in areas that need improvement. The report also contains recommended issues for discussion to assist the County Council’s oversight of the school system’s efforts to narrow the achievement gap.

During the morning session, the Council will present a proclamation recognizing the 45th anniversary of Community Ministries of Rockville. Since 1981, the nonprofit has served more than 59,600 individuals. The organization has programs that include housing, emergency assistance, healthcare, education and senior services. Through its emergency and transitional shelters, as well as permanent supportive housing programs, CMR helps homeless individuals. It also provides homecare and home repair services to elderly Rockville residents, helping them remain in their own homes.
