Navarro Named to “Top 100 Women” List (Video)

Nancy Navarro photoMontgomery County Council President Nancy Navarro has been named one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women” by the Baltimore-based Daily Record. This marks the second time the legislator has received the honor.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement by women as demonstrated through professional accomplishment, community leadership and mentoring. The winners are selected by an outside panel of business leaders. The 17th annual awards ceremony will be held on Monday, May 6, at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore.

“I’m honored to be selected as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women,” said Councilmember Navarro. “Perhaps what is most important to me are the qualifications considered to be on the list, and none of the three criteria is more important to me than the aspect of mentoring and making sure others have the same opportunities and experiences that I have had. This year’s list of 100 is so impressive from top to bottom and I am excited that The Daily Record has included me in such an accomplished group of women who are making a difference across Maryland.”

Council President Navarro is the first Latina president of the County Council, having been elected by her peers to a one-year term that began in December 2012. She was elected to represent District 4 on the County Council in a special election in May 2009 and was re-elected in the general election in November 2010. She chairs the Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) Committee and serves on the Health and Human Services Committee.

In October 2011, Councilmember Nancy Navarro was among four people President Barack Obama appointed to the President’s Advisory Commission on Hispanic Education. The commission was created by an executive order by President Obama with a mission of identifying and expanding access to high quality education for Hispanic students throughout the nation.

Prior to her election to the Council, Ms. Navarro served on the Montgomery County Board of Education, where she was twice elected president (2006 and 2008). Before entering public life, Ms. Navarro co-founded a non-profit, community-based organization whose mission is to assist the economic and educational development of Latino and other immigrant communities.
