At the Dec. 4  Montgomery County Council meeting, the county’s elected leaders selected Nancy Navarro as the Council’s newest president. She was nominated by Council member Craig Rice (in both English and Spanish) who noted the historic significance of her new leadership role. Nancy Navarro made some remarks as incoming president of the County Council.

Navarro succeeds Council Member Roger Berliner in the position and becomes the first Latina president of the County Council. She will serve a one-year term.

Council members receive annual compensation of $99,069, while the Council President receives ten percent additional compensation.

Prior to the Council president election, Berliner’s voice cracked with emotion as he thanked his staff for their dedication and hard work.

“It has been a true honor to serve you as President,” Berliner said in his closing remarks.

Following the Council president election, Council member Nancy Floreen nominated Council member Craig Rice as vice president. The Council unanimously agreed. Rice will also serve a one-year term as vice president.

In this video, CCM’s Susan Kenedy reports from the meeting.
