Walk to School Day

Montgomery County will participate in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 3.

County Executive Isiah Leggett, County Councilmembers Valerie Ervin, Craig Rice and Hans Riemer; local officials and other dignitaries will join Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School students, staff and parents on their walk to school to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Also joining Leggett will be Montgomery County Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kimberly A. Statham; Principal Gail Scott-Parizer and Assistant Principal Emmanuel Jean-Philippe.

Following the walk, AAA Mid-Atlantic will sponsor two assemblies featuring the robot Otto the Auto, who will teach children safe walking tips.

Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner will join students and parents from Wood Acres Elementary School in Bethesda for the annual Walk to School Day. The group walk will begin at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Cromwell Drive and Springfield Drive and is expected to arrive at the school by 8:30.

Walk to School Day is expected to include 5,000 schools throughout the United States and 40 countries around the world. Events focus on the need for safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

Sponsors of this year’s event at Drew Elementary School include Safe Kids Montgomery County, AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Foundation for Safety and Education, Federal Express, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, Montgomery County Police, Maryland Safe Routes Network, Maryland Highway Safety Office, Safe Routes to School National Partnership and Clif Kid.
