Severe Storms Knock Out Power

Severe thunderstorms with high winds and heavy rains rolled through Montgomery County during the afternoon of Sept. 8.
The storms knocked out power to thousands of Montgomery County residents. At one point, over 20,000 Pepco customers were without electricity.
Before and during the storms, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued several warnings including a severe thunderstorm watch and warning, a flash flood warning and a tornado warning.
The Silver Spring Jazz Festival was postponed one hour from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. because of the severe weather. Montgomery County officials alerted residents to the delay on the county’s Facebook page.
At 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 8, Pepco’s online outage maps indicated there were 20,233 customers in Montgomery County with no electricity.
Pepco officials issued a news release noting that crews were working round the clock to quickly restore power for customers and the numbers came down through the night.
At 8:50 a.m. on Sept. 9, the number of customers without electricity in Montgomery County stood at 759.
