Takoma Park Junction Redevelopment Project Review on Hold

The Takoma Park Junction Redevelopment Project review was put on hold after the city received a letter from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) regarding design concerns.

The letter, first dated April 6 and changed to April 13, voices concerns with the project’s design of a layby on Carroll Avenue, which was proposed to allow deliveries for area businesses.

The Takoma Park Junction Redevelopment Project aims to redevelop the Takoma Junction city-owned parking lot, in order to “act as a stimulus to the commercial district and locally-owned, independent businesses; improve the aesthetic appeal of the district; and be contextually sensitive and environmentally sustainable.” The project is estimated to cost $89,630 in legal fees, $42,500 for traffic study and $5,000 towards mediation.

MDOT SHA was asked to submit all comments for the Montgomery County Development Review process by June 2019, yet did not include any indication of its position on the layby. City and county officials then proceeded with the review of the project plans, including holding a special city council meeting on April 12.

The Takoma Park City Council was scheduled to review the site plan on April 14, April 28 and May 5. These dates will now be changed following the need to review MDOT SHA comments.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2023. More information on the proposed project can be found on the City of Takoma Park’s website.
