COVID Update: County Positivity Rate Below 3% for 8th Day, Maryland Below 4% for 10th Day

Montgomery County COVID-19 Statistics for March 3

The Maryland Department of Health reported 96 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Wednesday morning. The county’s cumulative case count is 63,595.

Montgomery County recorded two newly reported coronavirus-related fatalities Wednesday. The death toll is currently 1,375, the highest in the state.

As of Wednesday, 18 schools in the state are reporting COVID-19 cases, of those 18 one is located in Montgomery County. The Torah School of Greater Washington in Silver Spring reports two cases.

The county has a rolling seven-day average of 2.88% for positive COVID-19 tests, which is a decrease of 0.1 from Tuesday’s average rate of 2.98%. This is the eighth straight day the rate remains below 3%. The county’s positivity rate is lower than in 15 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.

President Biden announced Tuesday that there will be enough vaccine supply for every adult in the country by the end of May, due primarily to increase production and the authorization of a third vaccine by Johnson and Johnson (J&J). Biden also announced a new partnership between J&J and Merck to speed up vaccine production. The federal government will provide support under the Defense Production Act.

Gov. Hogan announced Tuesday during a COVID-19 briefing the state will have five mass vaccination sites by the end of March, one in each region of the state including National Capital, Southern MD, Western MD, Baltimore Metro, and Eastern Shore. The National Capital mass vaccination site is located at the Six Flags America theme park in Prince George’s county. Montgomery County continues to advocate for a mass vaccination site in the county.

With 1,375 fatalities, Montgomery County leads the state in total COVID-19 related fatalities but not in total cases. Prince George’s County has the most coronavirus cases in the state with 73,685 cases and 1,305 fatalities.

Somerset County located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore has the most cases per capita with 93.5 cases per 1,000 residents. Allegany County in the western region of the state has the second-highest cases per capita at 91 cases per 1,000 residents.

Wednesday the state recorded 786 new infections bringing the state’s cumulative case count to 383,956.

There are currently 863 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 across the state as of Wednesday morning. This is nearly 1,100 fewer hospitalizations than the pandemic high of 1,957 that occurred on Jan. 11.

There are 18 schools in the state reporting COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday morning.

Wednesday the state recorded 14 newly reported deaths, bringing the state death toll to 7,737.

The state reported a rolling seven-day average of 3.28% for positive COVID-19 tests Wednesday. This is a decrease of 0.07 from Tuesday’s rate of 3.35% and the tenth straight day the rate remains below 4%.
