In Response to Pandemic, County Approves Funds to Improve Ventilation in Schools

Montgomery County Council unanimously agreed to spend $3 million to update the HVAC systems in the public schools so that when students do return to the classrooms, their rooms will be better ventilated.

In response to the pandemic, the council agreed to fund enhancements to Montgomery County Public Schools’ HVAC system to reduce the airborne concentration of SARS-Co V-2, thereby reducing the risk of transmitting COVID-19 through the air.

Councilmember Hans Riemer called the expenditure “really important,” adding, “This is what is needed to make classrooms safe.”

The project includes replacing the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, automated temperature controls and plumbing systems within MCPS.
