Almost 6,500 Residents File Unemployment Claims

Almost 5,000 Montgomery County residents filed for unemployment during the week that ended May 30, according to the Maryland Department of Labor.

An additional 1,599 county residents filed through the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistant (PUS) and the Pandemic Emergency Compensation (PEUC), which is slightly less than last week. Those two funds are part of the federal stimulus bill.

Combining all three categories, 6,409 county residents filed an unemployment claim with the state Department of Labor during the week that ended May 30, according to figures released June 4.

The prior week, which ended May 23, a total of 7,638 residents filed an unemployment claim with the state Department of Labor.

Statewide, 43,095 people filed unemployment claims last week, which is almost 6,000 fewer than last week.
