10,000 In County Filed for Unemployment Last Week

Unemployment claims in Montgomery County topped 7,000 last week, which is about 4,000 fewer than were filed the week ending on May 2, according to the Maryland Department of Labor.

An additional 3,258 county residents filed through the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistant (PUS) and the Pandemic Emergency Compensation (PEUC), which is about 5,000 fewer than last week.

Those two funds are part of the federal stimulus bill.

During the week ending May 9, 7,133 county residents filled an unemployment claim with the state Department of Labor, according to figures released May 14.

Combining all three categories, 10,391 county residents applied for unemployment during the week that ended May 9.

Statewide, 45,709 people filed unemployment claims last week. An additional 20,096 Marylanders filled for PUA and PEUC, for a total of 65,805 claims.
