MMEA Cancels All State Music Festival Due to Coronavirus Concerns
Student musicians from across Maryland were planning to participate in the All State Music Festival this weekend, but the organization that coordinates the festival canceled it due to the spread of coronavirus.
The Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) announced Monday that all events for March 13-15 are canceled. MMEA is an association for school music teachers of Maryland. They provide opportunities for students to participate in state-wide music activities and events.
Students invited by their music teacher may apply to be part of a statewide band, orchestra, chorus, or jazz band, according to the MMEA website. Students audition to earn a very competitive spot in an ensemble. Prior to the festival, the student must learn the music to be performed at All States. But the band never practices together until the All States weekend.
This year, the All State festival was planned for March 13-15 and was taking place in the Baltimore area, primarily at Morgan State University in Baltimore County.
This letter was sent to parents or guardians of students scheduled to participate in the All State festival:
March 9, 2020
Dear All State Parent or Guardian:
The Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) has continued to monitor developments regarding the spread of novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Additionally, we have received several communications from concerned stakeholders regarding the All State festival this coming weekend. After collaborating with colleagues at the state and national levels, we have made the painful, albeit prudent decision to cancel the All State festival scheduled for this weekend.
Information regarding refunds will be forthcoming.
MMEA regrets the need to make this decision, but does so out of an abundance of caution and concern for the welfare of Maryland’s children. Please maintain contact with your child’s teacher and check the MMEA website (www.mmea-maryland.org) for updates. Thank you for your support of music education in Maryland.
Sincerely,
Angela Adams
Interim President
Maryland Music Educators Association
