Daylight Saving Time Starts Sunday

Remember to Check Your Clocks

Daylight saving time starts Sunday morning, March 8 at 2 a.m. Remember to check your clocks and set them ahead by one hour before going to sleep Saturday night. Many electronic devices automatically adjust when daylight saving time begins or ends.

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) website, daylight saving time (DST) is the part of the year when we advance our clocks by one hour, shifting the time of day in relation to where the Sun is above Earth.  That means daylight begins an hour later in the morning and lasts an hour longer in the evening.

An extra hour of sunlight during the evening is the result of the change in time. In Rockville, sunrise will take place at 6:31 a.m. on Saturday and at 7:29 a.m. on Sunday.  Sunset on Saturday will take place at 6:08 p.m. On Sunday, it will be at 7:09 p.m.

Remember to Check Your Smoke Alarms

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein is encouraging all residents to test and check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This is the time to ensure the alarms are working and up-to-date. Read more about fire safety in this Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service post.

The changeover back to standard time occurs Sunday, November 1 at 2 a.m. Some people remember which way to move their clocks using the phrase, “spring forward, fall back.”

Find more information about local time on the NIST website.
