Man Fatally Struck By Train at Germantown Marc Station

Montgomery County Police Department’s Major Crimes Division is investigating the death of a man who was fatally struck by a CSX Freight train at the Germantown Marc train station.

Randolph Garth, 60, of Martinsburg, W. Va., has been identified by police as the man who died. According to a police statement, officers from the Germantown district station and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services personnel were dispatched to the scene—located at 19301 Mateny Hill Road—at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Garth was crossing the tracks at the platform when he was struck by the CSX Freight train and died at the scene, police say.

People with information about this incident are encouraged to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.

Correction: A previous version of this article’s headline incorrectly said that the man was fatally struck by a Germantown Marc train. The headline has been changed because the man was actually fatally struck by a CSX Freight train at the Germantown Marc train station. We regret the error.

You need to change your headline. Do you know the difference between a MARC train and a CSX freight train? Your story says the pedestrian was struck by a CSX freight train, which is true. Your headline says struck by MARC train, which is not true. You have to take care in reporting train strikes. MARC trains operate on CSX tracks for the Brunswick Line, which means both CSX freight and MARC commuter rail use the same tracks. Actually, Amtrak’s Capitol Limited service that goes from DC to Chicago also use these tracks. Don’t assume that when an accident happens at or near a MARC station that is a MARC train.
