Excellence in Recycling Achievement

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) has recognized outstanding achievements in recycling, waste reduction, reuse, buying recycled-content products and educational efforts by local businesses, organizations, multi-family apartment and condominium properties, residents, and individuals.

Honorees were announced at the annual Recycling Achievement Recognition Program held at the Silver Spring Civic Building in late May.

Recognition was given for efforts including: recycling more than 50 percent of waste generated; implementing increased waste reduction activities; and contributing volunteer service to increase overall awareness and participation in the County’s recycling programs.

Awards were presented to the following recipients in several categories:

Outstanding Leadership Efforts to Increase Recycling Awareness

Five individuals were recognized for their efforts to increase overall awareness of recycling to others in the community — including volunteers who contributed significant amounts of their time to support the County’s recycling efforts and to those who establish efforts to educate residents about recycling and composting.  The following were recognized for their individual contributions to increase recycling awareness and participation in the county:  Yi Chen, Rockville; Elizabeth Golder, Rockville; Heidi Johnson, Wheaton; Brian Kao, Potomac; and Gina Lancaster, Whole Foods, Rockville. 

Multi-Family Property Continued Excellence in Recycling

The following multi-family properties were recognized for their efforts to maintain successful on-site recycling programs in 2011: Andrew Kim House, Olney; The Bennington at Silver Spring; Congressional Towers Apartment Homes, Rockville; Eastern Village Cohousing, Silver Spring; Jefferson at Inigo’s Crossing, North Bethesda; Sudbury House, Silver Spring; Wentworth House Apartments, North Bethesda; and Willow Wood Condominiums, Gaithersburg.

Multi-Family Property Excellence in Recycling

Recognition went to the following multi-family properties that established and/or contributed to excellence in their on-site recycling programs: 8045 at Silver Spring Metro; Churchill Senior Living, Germantown; Meridian at Grosvenor Station, North Bethesda; The Middlebrooke, Bethesda; and Victory Terrace, Potomac.

Multi-Family Property Outstanding Improvement in Recycling

The following multi-family properties received recognition for their specific efforts to improve on-site recycling achievement at their property during the past year:

Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg; Covenant Village, Germantown; The Grand, Bethesda; and The Manor Apartments, Silver Spring.

Multi-Family Property Outstanding Individual Achievement in Recycling

The following individuals at multi-family properties were recognized for their outstanding efforts to improve recycling programs and/or increase resident recycling awareness and participation: Bonnie and Tom Balzer, Riderwood, Silver Spring; Lance Connolly, Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg; and Ellie Hughes, Woodleaf Apartments, Silver Spring. 

Continued Excellence in Recycling – Business

The following businesses, organizations and commercial properties were recognized for their continuing efforts to recycle at least 50 percent of their waste stream for the past several years: ByteGrid Silver Spring, LLC; EU Services, Rockville; Euro Motorcars Bethesda; Fitzgerald Auto Malls, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville and Silver Spring; General Conference Corporation of the Seventh-Day Adventists, Silver Spring; Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Chevy Chase; Hughes Network Systems, LLC, Germantown; The Humane Society of the United States, Gaithersburg; Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters, Bethesda; MOM’s Organic Market, Rockville; and Montgomery College, Germantown, Rockville and Takoma Park.

The following businesses, organizations and commercial properties were recognized for their efforts to recycle at least 50 percent of their waste stream generated in 2011: Brandywine Realty Trust for 7101 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda; Clark Office Building, LLC, Bethesda; Christ Episcopal Church and School, Rockville; GenVec, Inc., Gaithersburg; The Kirlin Group, LLC, Gaithersburg; Landon School Corporation, Bethesda; Lockheed Martin Corporation, Rockville Curie Court; Lockheed Martin Center for Leadership Excellence, Bethesda; Norwood School, Bethesda; and Two Washingtonian Center, Gaithersburg.

Outstanding Achievement in Recycling – Business
