Festivals You Don’t Want to Miss This September

If you are looking to attend some fun events, this is the right time of year. Several festivals are coming up this September in Montgomery County. Here is a list of some of our favorite festivals where you, your family and friends can enjoy food, music, art and culture:

PawPaw Festival   Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 7 at the Meadowside Nature Center, 5100 Meadowside Lane, Rockville.
Montgomery Parks invites the public to indulge and learn about pawpaws, a native fruit grown at the Meadowside Nature Center. The event will feature music, crafts, games, face painting and a tasting station.

Takoma Park Folk Festival 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, September 8 at Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Road, Takoma Park.
The Takoma Park Folk Festival turns 40 this year. Enjoy six stages of music, community tables and the craft show which is held inside the halls of Takoma Park Middle School. Organizers suggest wearing sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen because most of the festival is held outdoors. The festival will move indoors if bad weather happens, but not for light rain.

Onam for All Festival   2:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 8 at Bohrer Park, 506 South Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg.
The city is celebrating Onam, a harvest festival celebrated in Kerala, India with flower carpets, traditional music and games. The schedule of the activities is as follows:

  • 2:30 p.m. – Onam Procession
  • 3 p.m. – Largest Thiruvathira dance in the East Coast
  • 4 p.m. – Cultural Showcase
  • 4:30 p.m. – Onam games

FutureFest  Noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, September 15 at the Silver Spring Civic Center, One Veterans Place.
The event focuses on creativity and innovation. Children and adults can explore over 90 interactive exhibits, participate in code jams, and hear kid talks from local innovators.

Apple Festival and Campfire  6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 20 at Meadowside Nature Center, 5100 Meadowside Lane, Rockville.
Apple season is here and Meadowside Nature Center in Rockville is celebrating the harvest season with apple cider, live music, s’mores at the campfire and many other hands-on activities.

Annual Children’s Day Festival 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, September 21 at Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton.
Enjoy a day out with the family. There will be live music, food trucks and entertainment. Activities will focus on children’s games, arts and craft and education.

36th Annual Middle Eastern Festival  Friday, September 20 to Sunday, September 22 at Saints Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church, 10620 River Road, Potomac.
The festival will feature deejay music on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, and live music and dancing on Saturday evening. Other highlights will include raffles; jewelry booths; religious items for sale; and children’s activities. Tours of the Byzantine-style church are provided for those interested and the choir will sing a collection of traditional hymns in a performance on Saturday at 3 p.m.

29th Annual Burtonsville Day Parade and Festival  10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 21
The theme this year is “Better Together” to recognize Burtonsville’s strong diversity. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to watch the parade form Old Columbia Pike. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and proceeds from Paint Branch High School to Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center. The festival includes live music, food trucks, activities for children, local business expos and more.

27th Annual Poolesville Day Festival  10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, September 21.
The town of Poolesville presents the 27th Annual Poolesville Day Festival featuring free activities including carnival rides, food vendors, a vehicle car show, Admission is free and open to the public. Click here for the schedule.

Honey Harvest Festival  Noon – 4 p.m. Sunday, September 22 at Brookside Nature Center, 1400 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton.
Brookside Nature Center and the Maryland State Beekeepers Association celebrates all things honey featuring beekeepers, harvested honey and local honey for sale.

Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday, September 22 in Downtown Wheaton.
The parade and festival return for the third year to celebrate the arts in Wheaton. Walk with fellow artists, friends, neighbors, and community groups as the parade marches up one side of the Wheaton Triangle (Georgia Ave) to a community arts festival near Wheaton Veterans Urban Park. The Arts Festival follows the parade with exhibits by more than 40 local artists. Enjoy live performances of music and dance, children’s art activities, a film-makers tent and a Food Court featuring some of Wheaton’s favorite restaurants. Rain or shine.

Montgomery County Friendship Picnic  Noon – 5 p.m. Sunday, September 22 at Wheaton Regional Park, 2000 Shorefield Road, Wheaton.
The picnic brings together people of diverse cultures and faiths to make new friends and to discuss ways to build a stronger community. This free picnic includes traditional, Kosher, Halal and vegetarian lunch options. There will be a wide range of activities for children and adults including music, dancing, a moon bounce, face painting, carousel, train rides and more.
