Animal Adoption Fees Waived for ‘Clear the Shelters’ Event
The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center is waiving adoption fees this weekend.
Clear the Shelters is a nationwide pet adoption initiative whose goal is to find animals good homes.
The event will take place on Aug. 17 at the county’s animal services and adoption center, 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood, and will be held from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. On-site parking is limited but additional parking will be available at the Covenant Life Church, 7501 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. A shuttle bus will run every 15 minutes between the center and the church.
Organizers said residents should expect long wait times.
Visitors interested in adopting a pet, should bring:
- Every member of your household OR written consent of the absent family member(s);
- A government issued photo ID;
- A copy of your lease with the pet addendum.
- Pet licenses for MoCo pets or rabies certificates for all out-of-county pets living in the home.
- Necessary pet gear (carrier or leash/harness).
All available animals can be seen on MCASAC’s website: View Available Pets.

When you waive or reduce adoption fees the people that show up to get a cheap or FREE pet will not have a FREE or cheap pet when the first inevitable veterinarian visit occurs. At that time there is a HUGE percentage of ‘clear the shelter’ adopted animals that are either out on the street or BACK IN THE SHELTER. Anyone convinced to adopt a pet BECAUSE it is free didn’t REALLY want a pet that much OR certainly did not think about the long term commitment and COST of that animal!
RESCUERS HAVE KNOWN FOR MANY DECADES THAT ‘FREE TO A GOOD HOME’ means to many people ‘free to do whatever the hell you want with’ !
