Councilmember Hucker Calls for Safety Improvements on Old Georgetown Road

Montgomery County officials plan to meet with state legislators and the State Highway Administration to encourage them to address safety issues with Old Georgetown Road and other roads in the County.

Earlier this month, Jacob Cassell died after being hit by a car on Old Georgetown Road. Cassell, a student at Churchill High School, was riding his bike on the sidewalk near Beech Avenue when he fell off the bike and onto the road. He was then struck by a vehicle, transported to the hospital and died the next morning.

Councilmember Tom Hucker, who chairs the Transportation Committee, explains that Old Georgetown Road is a State road that was built in 1959 based on outdated design standards. Specifically, their is no grass buffer between the sidewalk and the travel lanes to protect a pedestrian or someone in a wheelchair or a cyclist from falling into a travel lane. Hucker hopes the State will address the safety issues on Old Georgetown Road as well as Georgia Avenue, Colesville Road, and New Hampshire Avenue.

Hucker says the County envisions a protected bikeway on Old Georgetown Road as part of the County’s bike master plan.
