Police Charge 2 for Assault, Robbery of Man Who Died in Georgia Avenue

Kenneth Sahr Kpakima | MCPD

A 21-year-old and a 17-year-old have been charged in the assault, robbery and death of a 40-year-old man who was found dead in the middle of Georgia Avenue, Montgomery County police said Friday.

The 21-year-old is Kenneth Sahr Kpakima and was charged Wednesday with assault and armed robbery, police said.

The 17-year-old is Mohammed Salous, who was charged as an adult Tuesday with assault-related offenses for his involvement in the robbery, police said.

Kpakima (also spelled Kapakima) and Salous are both being held without bail, police said. A 15-year-old girl has been identified but has not been charged at this time, police said.

The victim was Gregory Atwood of Tynewick Drive, police said. Atwood was found dead in the southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue at Hewitt Avenue before 4 a.m. Friday, June 8, police said.

There was evidence of trauma to his body, police said.

Police said two vehicles struck Atwood, and the drivers of those vehicles fled. One of the vehicles is possibly a 2011 Chrysler 200 or a 2011 Dodge Avenger (unknown color), police said. Collision Reconstruction Unit investigators believe that the second car was a light-colored Dodge Durango, police said.

A review of surveillance video in the area showed that before the collision, Kpakima, Salous and the 15-year-old assaulted and robbed Atwood, police said. Detectives have further determined that Atwood suffered injuries from the assault and that the suspects fled after they assaulted Atwood, police said.

Detectives continue to investigate the hit-and-run portion of the investigation. There is considerable vehicle and foot traffic near Georgia and Hewitt avenues, even at the time when this robbery and subsequent hit-and-run collision occurred, police said.

Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision, who were in the area around the time of this collision, saw something suspicious, or could have any information about this collision, to please call the Wheaton police district station at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
