UPDATE: Police ID Officer Who Shot, Killed Man

UPDATE: Montgomery County police have identified the officer in the shooting as Anand Badgujar, who has served about two years with police. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division and works in the Silver Spring police district.  More information is expected this afternoon.

A Montgomery County police officer shot and killed a man after an altercation on Three Oaks Drive in Silver Spring, Chief Tom Manger told reporters.

“There is no indication that the man had a weapon,” Manger said.

The shooting took place about 2:15 p.m. Monday on a quiet street not far from Highland View Elementary School and Sligo-Bennington Neighborhood Park.

The victim was African American. The officer, whom Manger said would be named Tuesday, had been on force for two years. Officer Rick Goodale said the officer was of Indian descent.

The victim has not been identified, he said.

Manger told reporters that following protocol, Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office will investigate.

Manger spoke with reporters at an impromptu news conference along Sligo Creek Parkway. Three Oaks Drive residents who were heading home from work found the street blocked off by police cars.

Ella Robinson, a 15-year-old sophomore at Einstein High School, said she heard the altercation and she heard six shots. Manger did not confirm the number of shots.

The officer was in neighborhood for what Manger believed was a 911 hang-up. Officer had completed his work on the call when he interacted with the man.

Manger said the officer activated his body-worn camera, and the footage will be reviewed.
