Manna Food Center held its annual Heroes Against Hunger Awards Reception at the Fillmore in Silver Spring Wednesday night to recognize community champions in the fight against hunger.

Awards were given in three categories: Individual Hero, Corporate Hero, and Community Hero, according to a news release.

The winners, selected by Manna’s Volunteer Board of Directors, include: Mead Family Foundation as Community Partner of the Year; Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. as Corporate Partner of the Year; and Ellen Teller of Food Research & Action Center, as Individual Hero of the Year.

“I was delighted and very proud to have played a small part in the evolution of Manna over the last few decades,” Teller said. “It has become a real hub in the community not only for direct service for food, but for education on federal food programs and outreach.”

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett was also honored during Manna’s awards ceremony. Leggett received a legacy award for his commitment to supporting the organization’s mission, according to a news release.

With a mission to eliminate hunger in Montgomery County, Manna has worked with thousands of volunteers, organizations, and elected officials to provide food-services for the more than 70,000 county residents who experience food insecurity.
