“Beltway Bistros: Part III, The Chinese Experience in America” received a Communicator Award of Distinction for 2012. Beltway Bistros is produced by George Ramick. George has been associated with Montgomery Community Media since 2002 when he became a member and started his training with MCM.

Each program in the “Beltway Bistros” series takes a country and tries to answer how it has changed the way we now live and eat. The “Chinese Experience in America” looks back at how the Chinese fared when they came to this country, or “gold mountain,” almost 200 years ago. Over the years they had to overcome violence, bigotry, injustice, and hardship. During the 1800s it was widely believed that the Chinese would never become part of America’s mainstream.

This program examines the Lee family of San Francisco and how it fared over the last 100 years. Through hard work, strong family ties, and a devotion to education they did very well.

Today Chinese-Americans are the largest Asian community in this country and one of the most successful groups to have become part of the American fabric.

The Communicator Awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), a 550+ member organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.
