Transportation Secretary To Meet with Council Committee

Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn meets with the Montgomery County Council’s transportation committee today to discuss Gov. Larry Hogan’s $7.6 billion plan to relieve traffic on I-270 and I-495.

The committee’s meeting begins at 2:30 p.m. and will take place in the Third Floor Conference Room of the Council Office Building in Rockville.

Council members have criticized the governor’s plan because they believe a single, reversible lane can handle the congestion in I-270 at far less cost than the two lanes in each director that Hogan has proposed.

The council also questions how extra lanes can be added to the Capital Beltway because so many homes, parks and businesses are constructed so close to the highway.

At a hearing earlier this month in Rockville, Deputy Secretary Jim Ports described a highway in Texas where lanes were built on top of existing lanes. Here’s what he said:

Hogan has proposed a public-private partnership (P-3) to design, build, manage and operate the roads, which would eliminate the need for state funding. At the earlier hearing, Ports said bidders on the P-3 would describe how they would solve the area’s traffic congestion.

Here’s the council’s staff report on Hogan’s plan:
