Leggett Signs Minimum Wage Legislation (VIDEO)
County Executive Ike Leggett signs the minimum wage legislation.
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett signed legislation Monday to enact the long-debated $15 an hour minimum wage.
“This is a big day for Montgomery County, but more importantly it is a big day for workers not only throughout Montgomery county and but hopefully throughout this state and around this nation,” Leggett said, at a ceremony held in the Rockville offices of Casa de Maryland, an immigrant rights organization.
The county’s current minimum wage is $11.50. The measure increases the wage to $15 an hour by 2021 for most workers, for 80 percent of workers by 2023 and for everyone by 2024, County Council President Roger Berliner said in his remarks.
The council voted unanimously to approve the wage increase last week.
After the bill signing, Leggett said some businesses were still disappointed with the bill’s passage.
“There was some disappointment, but it’s not as catastrophic as the original bill,” Leggett said afterward. “They reluctantly respected what we have done. Relieved it not a quickly as the original bill.”
