Here are five things to know today, Oct. 12, in Montgomery County, Maryland:

1. Special Populations: The Board of Education Committee on Special Populations meets at 10 a.m. The meeting will be live online and on MCPS TV (Comcast Channel 34 and Verizon 36). Here’s the agenda. Working closely with the superintendent, the committee may provide initial recommendations based upon in-depth review of issues and instructional programs designed to meet the needs of special populations that require special education services, gifted and talented instruction, alternative programs, ESOL services, and multilingual supports. The committee’s work plan will consist only of tasks as assigned by the full Board.

2. Canvas Painting: ME+YOU=US: Canvas Painting, Paint in pairs as you and a partner create your own works that combine into a unified masterpiece. From 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kentlands Mansion. $10 supply fee due at workshop. $30.00 Resident, $35.00 Non-resident.

3. Flu Clinic: Walmart is hosting free flu shots at the White Oak Senior Center, 1700 April Lane, Silver Spring.

4. Water Plan: The Montgomery County Council’s Transportation and Environment Committee meets to discuss category changes to the Ten-Year Comprehensive Water Supply and Sewerage Systems Plan. The meeting is at 10 a.m. in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room, Council Office Building, Rockville.

5. Meditation: The Marilyn J. Praisner Library hosts “Meditation with David Newcomb: Reducing Anxiety through Meditation.” The event runs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
