UPDATED: Man Dies After His Scooter Collides with Police Cruiser

Updated, 11:30 a.m.: The 74-year-old man killed when his scooter collided with an unmarked police cruiser has been identified Loreto Andal Canubas of Dewey Road in Kensington, according to a notice posted on the Montgomery County police news website. The police officer has been identified Officer Robert Farmer, who has been an officer for about eight-and-a-half years and who is currently assigned to the Police Community Action Team (PCAT), the notice says. Officer Farmer has been placed on administrative leave as is standard protocol.

Original post: A 74-year-old man died Wednesday night when his motor scooter collided with an unmarked Montgomery County police cruiser on Veirs Mill Road, a police statement said.

Wheaton District officers and county fire and rescue personnel responded to the crash about 9:30 p.m. The man, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was taken to Suburban Hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.

An on-duty Montgomery County police officer was driving the cruiser, the statement said. He was not seriously injured, police said.

The statement did not provide the names of the deceased nor of the police officer. The statement said their names would be released later Thursday morning.

Police collision reconstruction experts are investigating the collision, which occurred at Norris Drive, police said. The collision took place about a mile northwest of Westfield Wheaton mall.

Preliminary investigation revealed that man was operating a Sunra Motor Scooter southbound on Monterrey Drive at Veirs Mill Road and tried to cross over Veirs Mill Road, police said.

After crossing the westbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, the scooter operator entered the eastbound lanes, when for reasons still under investigation, the motor scooter and an unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser, eastbound on Veirs MIll Road, collided in the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, police said.

Multiple witnesses provided information to investigators, police said.
