Is there a better way to end the month of August than a session of yoga led by Mike Gaitan? AMP by Strathmore and North Bethesda Sport and Health think they have a winning combination with Thursday evening’s Yoga and Live Music: A Candlelight Practice. The session begins at 7:30 p.m. at AMP, located in the new Pike & Rose community, 11580 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at AMP by Strathmore.

Mike Gaitan leads an intermediate level yoga class accompanied by the tranquil sounds of master flautist Deepak Ram. The class includes an intermediate-level asana practice, a savasana accompanied by the sound of gongs, a focus on the breath (pranayama), and a short meditation on prana or the vital life force.

Following the class, refreshments will be provided with an opportunity for discussion.

Yoga instructor Mike Gaitan began the systematic practice of yoga in 2002 and has studied extensively in the school of Parayoga and the Himalayan Institute with Yogarupa Rod Stryker and Pandit Rajmani Tigunait. Gaitan’s teaching focuses on developing asana practices to promote stability in the body, breath, and mind, while weaving in yogic philosophies and practices.

Musician Deepak Ram is known for his performances in traditional North Indian (Hindustani) classical music. His compositions and genre-crossing collaborations have won international critical praise, including an award for Best Instrumental Album at the South African Music Awards. Ram is a senior disciple of world-renowned bansuri maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. He is an accomplished soloist and a celebrated instructor and versatile artist. Ram has collaborated with diverse talents including jazz pianists Darius Brubeck and Bheki Mseleku, Tunisian oud player and vocalist Dhafer Yousseff, and the popular South African band Tanana.
