Metro To Test Technique To Prevent Arcing Insulators
Metro GM Paul Wiedefeld told the Montgomery County Council on Tuesday about the water that was entering the Red Line tunnels, which didn’t mix well with the electric-powered trains.
The next day, Metro announced it had approved a pilot program to test a “curtain grouting” technique that will add a waterproof membrane to the exterior of the tunnel walls using a proprietary polymer-based material.
The announcement included this quote from Wiedefeld: “Since this tunnel segment was constructed, Metro has fought a battle against Mother Nature, and Mother Nature has always had the upper hand.”
Water caused arcing insulators during the Friday morning rush hour, forcing the suspension of Red Line service. The dual incidents led to widespread delays, crowding and inconvenience for tens of thousands of riders.
