Hogan to Propose Variable Speed Limits, Ramp Metering for I-270 (VIDEO)
Gov. Larry Hogan plans to unveil in the coming days how he would spend $100 million as part of his “Innovative Congestion Management Project” to improve travel times on the highway, a Hogan spokeswoman said Monday.
Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner said Monday he had learned Friday that the governor had awarded the money, which he announced in July.
“This is trying to do something on the cheap when we need a significant infrastructure investment,” Berliner said.
Although Hogan spokeswoman Amelia Chasse refused to provide any details on the project, Transportation Planning Board documents describe “a two-pronged approach of roadway improvements and innovative technologies and techniques to maximize vehicular throughput, minimize vehicle travel times, and create a more predictable commuter trip along I-270 between I-70 and I-495.”
The board, which meets Wednesday, is part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
The documents describe 14 roadway improvement projects, including extending acceleration and exit lanes at Md. 109, I-370 and Md. 118.
Also considered are variable speed limits or ramp metering, which automatically set the optimum rate of release at each ramp.
Berliner said the proposal “doesn’t strike me as particularly innovative, but more importantly we have seen nothing in terms of travel time savings.”
