Homeless Shelters and Nonprofits Preparing for Anticipated Winter Storm

Local nonprofits and homeless shelters are getting to serve more people after a winter storm warning was issued by the Montgomery County Emergency Management for Monday evening.

Residents can expect snow accumulations in Montgomery County between six to ten inches, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

“It’s hard to know for sure, but we are expecting between 100 and 150 people,” Nikki Stanaitis, program director of Interfaith Works Shelter in Silver Spring said.

According to Stanaitis, if residents need a place to stay warm during the day, Interfaith Works will be open for 24 hours.

“Residents can come during the day if you never been here before,” Stanaitis said. “The shelter is open to all Montgomery County residents.

Staff from Shepherd’s Table in Silver Spring said they will also be open for anyone needing food.

“We are open no matter what,” said Haile Gebregziabher, director of operations, Shepherd’s Table.  “We will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner as usual.”

Breakfast will be served between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served from 12 p.m.to 1 p.m. and dinner is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
