New American Citizen Votes in Wheaton (VIDEO & PHOTOS)

Marylanders turned out in record numbers on the first day of early voting in the General Election. One of the nearly 2,000 people who lined up at the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad is a native of Brazil. MyMCMedia’s Phyllis Armstrong reports on the new citizen’s first trip to the polls in America.

Izis Weills says voting is mandatory in Brazil. Maryland elections officials estimate an early voter turnout of some 22,498 people in Montgomery County on October 27. That represents about three percent of the county’s voting population. In 2014, just over five and a half percent of the county’s eligible and active voters went to the polls during the early voting period.
