Metro General Manager Announces Elimination of “About 500 Positions”

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld has announced plans to eliminate up to 500 jobs this year.
In a “business efficiency” memo dated June 27, and addressed to WMATA senior management, Wiedefeld said the positions must be eliminated “to operate in a businesslike manner and achieve cost savings.”
According to Wiedefeld, the department of human resources is currently revising outdated policies and processes that will guide the reduction of staff in positions that are no longer critical to Metro’s business interests.
“Once identified, those positions that are currently occupied by incumbents will be eliminated through the appropriate process,” he said in the memo. “In the case of represented positions, Labor Relations will work with department heads to ensure proper notifications and adherence with collective bargaining agreements. Human Resources will work with department heads to implement the administrative process necessary to notify non-represented personnel of impacts to their positions.”
Although the process is going to take months, Wiedefeld said it is important to give employees as much notice as possible.
