Capital Beltway Road Work Begins June 10th

Road Construction Cones for featured imageUPDATED Commuters take note: beginning June 10th, the State Highway Administration (SHA) plans to temporarily close two lanes on the Outer Loop of I-495 from Georgia Avenue to Connecticut Avenue.

According to the SHA, at approximately 9 p.m. crews will begin emergency repairs to the I-495 Bridge over Jones Mill Road/Stonybrook Drive. Officials said the bridge driving surface is in poor condition and needs repairs.

During the lane closures, crews will remove the top layer of concrete on the bridge, repair the bridge expansion joints and deck, and resurface the bridge deck with concrete. According to an SHA news release, the work will improve ride quality for drivers in this area.

SHA Spokesperson Charlie Gischlar said the work was originally planned for June 3rd but was postponed a week because of the weather forecast for the weekend.

Weather and progress permitting, all lanes should reopen no later than 5 a.m. Monday morning. Since large sections of concrete will be removed and new concrete poured, this work cannot take place overnight during the week due to the concrete curing process.

According to the SHA, the repairs and lane closures will take place in two phases. Crews will first close two left lanes on the outer loop of I-495 to begin repairs, reopen the left two lanes once the first phase of work is complete and then close the right two lanes on the outer loop of I-495 to complete the second phase of the repairs.

All lanes necessary to complete each phase of the repairs will remain closed until it is safe for motorists, SHA officials said. Commuters should plan ahead and expect delays.
