“Flags For Our Heroes” Exhibit Returns to Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg This Weekend
UPDATED It’s a Memorial Day tradition, and a sight to behold.
The Rotary clubs of Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg have erected 750 large American flags on the lawn at Bohrer Park. The flag exhibit will be on display for four days from now until Memorial Day.
The exhibit is officially entitled, “Flags for Our Heroes,” and the opening ceremonies are planned for 11 a.m. on May 28th. The ceremony will feature motorcyclists, instrumental and vocal performances by location musicians, presentation of the colors, brief talks by city of Gaithersburg dignitaries, a demonstration by Hero Dogs, Inc., which provides service dogs for wounded veterans, and the planting of a ceremonial flag. Everyone is welcome to attend.
“Walking thru the field of flags is a moving experience that has brought some veterans and their family members to tears,” said Eric Jorgensen, president of the Rotary Club of Montgomery Village.
Rodney Mayer of the Gaithersburg Rotary Club described the field as “joyous and uplifting.”
Members of both Rotary clubs will be at the exhibit all weekend along with members of Boy Scout Troop 457 (Rockville). A few of the flags were damaged last year and will be disposed of properly by the scouts in a formal Flag Retirement Ceremony on May 29th around 5 p.m. at the Field of Honor.
According to organizers, some flags will be reserved for persons who want to sponsor them on-site throughout the holiday weekend.
