Governor Hogan Signs Three Bills into Law (PHOTOS)

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed the “Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act of 2016” into law today along with two other bills.

According to a news release, the bill requires Maryland to reduce statewide gas emissions by 40 percent from 2006 levels by 2030. The legislation was introduced in the Maryland General Assembly by Maryland Delegate Kumar Barve and State Senator Paul Pinsky.

Barve is chair of the House Environment and Transportation Committee and stated the following in a news release.

“Today, Maryland takes a giant environmental leadership step in addressing climate disruption by substantially reducing carbon emissions,” Barve said. “Our state recognizes the urgency and scope of the problem and will continue to work with the Obama Administration in ensuring that the we do our part to reduce our carbon footprint,” he said.

Hogan also signed the “The Hartford County Deputy Sheriff’s Daily Logsdon Benefits Memorial Act.” The bill is honor of two fallen Hartford County officers and increases the maximum age for children of law enforcement officers to receive death and pension benefits.

“Marylanders were incredibly saddened by the tragic loss of two of our heroes – Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies Pat Dailey and Mark Logsdon,”  Hogan said. “Our state owes families like theirs a tremendous debt, and providing these extended benefits is one small way that we can honor their sacrifice,” he said.

A bill restoring funding to the state’s preservation program known at Program Open Space, was also signed into law. The program helps finance parks and conservation projects statewide.

“These important pieces of legislation will have a profound impact on preserving our environment, while creating jobs and protecting our business community,” Hogan said. “I want to thank both the Senate and House for supporting our initiatives,” he said.
