Mt. Vernon Square Metro Station to Close During Nuclear Summit

metro5Metro officials announced today that the Mt. Vernon Square Metrorail Station will close for two days during the 2016 Nuclear Summit at the request of the Secret Service.

The closure will begin on the evening of March 30 and continue thru April 1, according to WMATA.

According to a WMATA news release, the closure is necessary because Mt. Vernon Square Station falls within the secure perimeter for the summit, a designated National Special Security Event that is expected to bring together heads of state from dozens of countries.

Green and Yellow line trains will operate through Mt. Vernon Square without stopping, and all other Metrorail stations are expected to be open during the event.

Customers should take note of the following service information:

• Mt. Vernon Square Station will be closed starting at approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, and continuing through Friday evening, April 1. (The station will reopen after the U.S. Secret Service discontinues security efforts late Friday evening.)
• During this time, Green and Yellow line trains will not stop at Mt Vernon Square station. All trains will pass through the station without stopping.
• Customers who normally use Mt Vernon Square should use Gallery Place or Shaw-Howard stations instead. Either alternate station is located approximate 0.5 miles from Mt Vernon Square (about a 10-minute walk).
• Due to road closures, alternate bus service will not be provided.
